Albert Prior - 1862 to 1945

Albert Prior was was born 13 January 1862 in Toppesfield Essex UK, the first born child of Eliza Prior, a 22 year old straw plaiter living with her parents and siblings in the village. Almost 4 years later his mother Eliza would marry Edward Argent in Toppesfield on Christmas Day 1865.

The family legend or story is that Edward Argent was Albert Prior's father. Our own father, who is Albert's great grandson, believes that our surname should in fact be Argent. As Edward was also an illegitimate child, perhaps he was compassionate towards Eliza's son, or he was in fact Albert's father. And we have no clues as to the identity of Edward's father or his name.

This story is meaningful given that in the 1871 census Albert, age 9 and a scholar, was listed as a son living with Edward & Eliza Argent in Yeldham Rd. His occupation was Plaiter along with his 6 year old sister Elizabeth (more is said about straw plaiting schools in another post). This is the only record I have found that gives Albert the surname Argent, as the 1881 census listed Albert as a Prior, age 19 and an Agricultural Labourer living with his grandparents Thomas & Harriet Prior in The Street. Also in the household were Albert's aunt Emma age 30, who remained a spinster, uncle Lewis age 21, who also worked as an Ag Lab, and cousin Frederick age 1 (see blog about Thomas & Harriet).

Albert left Toppesfield to work with the contractors building the railway to Southminster and Southend Victoria. In 1883 at age of 21 he joined the Great Eastern Railway (GER) * as a Platelayer for eighteen shillings a week. This brought him to the village of Hockley in Essex, where he would marry and live our the remainder of his life.

On Christmas Day * 1885, Albert Prior married Eliza Jane Pinnock Jarvis in the Hockley parish church. Eliza Jane was only 15 years old but already in service receiving one shilling a week and keep.

Albert & Eliza Prior lived in a cottage in Spa Road Hockley which they named 'China Cottage' as the external walls were decorated with a multitude of broken china pieces. All their children were born in China Cottage:
  -  Ethel Eliza   b.28 July 1886
  -  Elizabeth Emily   b.22 January 1888
  -  Albert John   b.12 January 1891
  -  Edward Thomas   b.12 December 1892
  -  Henry Arthur   b.4 February 1895
  -  Annie Maud   b.1 August 1898
Copies of all birth certificates can be found in the back of the book Millenium Hockley, compiled by F.C.Prior 1999

     Albert & Eliza:

Biography of Albert Prior

by E.H.Prior (April 1990)

Albert Prior was born on the 13th January 1862 and was registered on 14th February 1862 in the Sub-district of Hedingham Essex. His mother was Eliza Prior of Toppesfield and the father’s name was not given, Eliza signed with the mark of a cross. In the 1861 census Eliza gave her occupation as Straw Plaiter. Albert always maintained that he was really an ‘Argent’, this is proved to a certain extent by the census of 1881, Thomas Prior age 64 Agricultural Labourer living at “the Street” Toppesfield along with his wife Harriet age 62, Emma daughter age 30, Lewis son age 21 and Albert grandson age 21. Eliza Prior married Edward Argent about 1863 (sic) and Albert had step brothers Thomas, Harry, Freddy and John.

This was in the days of the Railway Builder and Albert left home to join the railway navvies and helped to build the railway from Wickford to Southend Victoria and after the completion of the line, joined the Great Eastern Railway as a platelayer at Hockley. He married Eliza Jane Jarvis age 15 on the 25th December 1886 (sic). They lived in a small thatched cottage which they called “China Cottage” in Spa Road near Hockley Station. A coin was found under a floor of the cottage which indicated it could have been built about 1635.

On the 14th December 1914 Albert bought the cottage from a Mr Anson Fulcher for the sum of one hundred and ten pounds, the transaction was conducted by Patterson & Brewer, solicitors to the National Union and Railwaymen.

Albert was quite a handyman, village lamplighter, local barber and acting Postman during the 1914-18 war, he was also a good gardener and wine maker, an active member of “The Amalgamated Society of Railway Servants” and the “Ancient Order of Foresters Rochford Branch (1883).

His wife Eliza was the village midwife and a good needlewoman and was one of those that rode on the first train from Wickford to Southend. They had six children, Ethel, Elizabeth, Ann, Albert, Edward and Henry, the three boys served in the Army during the 1914-18 war, Edward did not return. Albert became the first Telegraph lad in Hockley, then became a postman. Henry became a lad Porter on Hockley Station and after the war became a Goods Guard. Ethel and Elizabeth both married Railway Signalmen.

Albert retired from the G.E.R as a Sub-Ganger at Hockley on 8th August 1927, he died in 1945 age 83 and was buried in the churchyard of St Peter & St Paul Hockley Essex.

Albert belonged to the Ancient Order of Forresters *, Rochford branch, and The Amalgamated Society of a Railway Servants. He was the local Barber and Lamplighter.

Eliza Jane was the unqualified midwife for Hockley. She remembered Hockley when there was no railway or bus service.

Twig Talk - I note that Albert & Eliza gave their first born daughter the middle name Eliza, also the name of Albert's mother; named their first born son Albert with middle name John, possibly after Eliza's great grandfather John Jarvis who died in Hockley 7 years earlier; named their second son Edward Thomas, probably after Albert's father/stepfather Edward Argent and his grandfather Thomas Prior, with whom Albert had lived; and named their third son Henry Arthur, possibly after Eliza's stepgrandfather Henry Warner ... or at a guess her biological father?, a search for the name Pinnock in Essex census records of the time reveal a Henry Pinnock b.1852 of Wiltshire, residing in Barking Eesex at time of Eliza's birth; he later married in 1874 & lived his life in Ilford Essex, is he related?

* historical information:

1. Marriages on Christmas Day

Our family tree has at least a dozen couples who married on Christmas Day in the late 1800's, especially within the parish of Toppesfield, and most notably Albert's mother Eliza Prior & Edward Argent in 1865. Then Albert Prior married his Eliza Jane Jarvis in Hockley on Christmas Day 1885, which happened to be the 20th wedding anniversary of his mother to Edward.

Marriages on Christmas Day were common in the 19th century, perhaps due to Christmas Day being the only work holiday for many (weddings were not usually held on Sundays), and the only day the family could all get together, while reducing the cost for working class families by combining family celebrations.

This could very well apply to a rural farming village such as Toppesfield which relied heavily on its Agricultural Labourers.

2. Building the Great Eastern Railway

The Great Eastern Railway was incorporated on the 7th August 1862, a formal amalgamation of several existing railway companies.

The Great Eastern Railway (GER) built the line from Wickford to Southend Victoria in 1889, which was first opened for goods transport only.

Opening of Essex Railways:
 Witham to Maldon - 15 August 1848
 Bhenfield to Wickford - 19 March 1888
 Wickford to Southminster - 1 June 1889
 Wickford to Southend - 1 October 1889
Woodham Ferrero to Maldon - 1 October 1889
 Keveldon to Tiptree - 1 October 1904

 3. The Ancient Order of Forresters

The Ancient Order of Foresters was established in 1834, now known as Foresters Friendly Society, and originated from the Royal Foresters formed around 1745.

Their main purpose was the duty to assist their fellow men who fell into need "as they walked through the forests of life". This 'need' arose principally when a breadwinner fell ill, could not work and received no wages. Illness and death left families financially distressed and often destitute. Members would pay into a common fund, which would be used to offer sick pay and funeral grants when needed.

Eliza Prior - 1839 to 1920

Eliza Prior was born on 1 October 1839 in Toppesfield Essex UK, the first of 11 children born to Thomas & Harriet Prior. Eliza was a scholar at age 11 and a Straw Plaiter at age 21, all the while living with her parents, perhaps to help with the care of her younger siblings, and possibly till her marriage at age 26 to Edward Argent.

On 6 June 1861, when the census was taken, Eliza age 21 lived with her parents and 7 siblings in Toppesfield. She was also about 7 weeks pregnant with her first child, our second great grandfather Albert Prior. She gave birth to Albert on 13 January 1862 at age 22 and unmarried. A daughter Elizabeth arrived in June 1864, and the following year she married Edward Argent on 25 December 1865, Christmas Day.

Edward Argent was also from Toppesfield, born in 1837. In census records his occupation was  Agricultural Labourer, however on his 1865 marriage record to Eliza, his occupation is Blacksmith. The same record confirms that he was illegitimate; more on the Argent's below.

In the 1871 census Eliza & Edward Argent resided at Yeldum Road Toppesfield, with both Albert & Elizabeth listed as their children and therefore Argent's. Edward and Albert had something in common as they were both illegitimate children, perhaps this made Edward compassionate towards Albert or perhaps he was really Albert's father. However, despite this Albert would always use the surname Prior, while Elizabeth would be known as Argent; later Albert would reside with his grandparents Thomas & Harriet Prior.

  -  Thomas Argent b.1867, m Eliza
  -  Harry Argent b.1869, m Harriet Louisa Pike
  -  Freddy Argent b.1877

  -  Arthur Argent b.1882
  -  Bertha May Argent b.1891

The Argent's

Edward Argent was born on 1 January 1837 in Toppesfield, the child of Susana Argent age 17, his father unknown, the grandson of Joseph & Elizabeth Argent. He initially lived with his grandparents, as his mother Susana Argent was to marry Thomas Butcher in 1840 & have 5 more children. After Thomas's death in 1851, Edward (age 15) lived with his mother and half siblings in the village, until his marriage to Eliza Prior in 1865.

Edward's grandfather Joseph Argent was born on 8 October 1790 in Stambourne, a neighbouring village. He was a Labourer but joined the Military on 10 April 1809 at age 19; his record describing him as 5"7' with fair complexion, dark brown hair, and hazel eyes in a round face. He served 9 years in the Foot Regiments during the Napoleonic & other wars, his service ending on 10 March 1819. In 1820 he resided with Elizabeth (surname unknown) in Canterbury Kent where their daughter Susana was born, then Sheffield Yorkshire in 1825 where their son William was born, finally moving the family to Toppesfield sometime during the next 10 years.

In 1866 Susana Argent Butcher remarried to John Daines, a widower with 5 children, also from Toppesfield. In the 1871 census they lived in the village with John Daines age 18 (John & Marianne's son), and unknown relations Betsy Daines age 29, Frederick Butcher age 9, and grandson Herbert Daines age 1.

Straw Plaiter
Both Eliza and her mother Harriet were Straw Plaiters according to census records, and perhaps Eliza's grandmother Sarah Prior was also a Straw Plaiter.

Looking for Minnie McDermott

Minnie McDermott is our great grandmother.

We would like to know who she was, and who her family is; because they are our family. The following is what we know about her, and also what we are trying to discover.

On the 10th March 1922, Minnie McDermott gave birth to a baby girl, our grandmother Eileen, at Saint James Hospital, located at 46 Ouseley Road Balham London. Minnie was then living at 35 Telford Avenue Streatham London, where she worked as a Domestic Servant.

Saint James Hospital began as Saint James Imfirmary in Sarsfield Road Balham in 1909, associated with the workhouse on an adjoining site. It changed its name to Saint James Hospital when it moved to Ouseley Road Balham in 1922, changed ownership several times over the years, and eventually closed in 1980.

    Eileen's birth certificate

Eileen McDermott was given up for adoption, probably at birth as it is believed that she lived in a children's home before she was adopted by Alf & Nellie Lowe, our great grandparents. Elijah Alfred (Alf) Lowe & Nellie Allison married on 13 December 1924. Eileen's adoption was legally certified on 27 July 1927 in The Juvenile Court, Old Street Shoreditch, but it is possible that Eileen was living with the Lowe's before the court appearance, especially given that adoption was only formalised in the UK in 1925.

    Eileen's adoption certificate

Twig Talk - it is an interesting coincidence that Eileen is almost a palindrome of Nellie ...

The Inner London Juvenile Court sat in the newly-built Old Street Magistrates Court and Police Station in Shoreditch from 1910, moved across the road into the Shoreditch Town Hall in 1925, then to Toynbee Hall in Commercial Street in 1929. It closed down around 1950, and the court records were sent to the London Metropolitan Archives (LMA).

Shoreditch Town Hall in Old Street

In an attempt to locate Minnie McDermott, I have searched online genealogy websites and forums for a Minnie McDermott born around 1905 in the London area, and I have checked each one listed on the 1911 UK census.  I have tried to track down the Old Street Juvenile Court records of Eileen McDermott's adoption by writing to the Head of Archives at the London Metropolitan Archives in January 2013. I received an email reply from Bridget Howlett, Senior Archivist at LMA, who confirmed that Eileen's adoption court record was held by them, however they cannot grant access to anyone other than the adopted person. Unfortunately, our grandmother Eileen passed away in 2007, so until the record can be accessed by relatives we will continue to be unaware of any clues it contains.

Twig Talk - In the 1911 UK census there is a Minnie McDermott who could potentially be our great grandmother. Her full name is Winifred Mary McDermott and she lived in Kensington London ...

Thomas Prior - 1818 to 1882

Thomas Prior was born in Toppesfield Essex on 26 July 1818, a son of William & Sarah Prior, baptised in the Church of St Margaret of Antioch where his parents were married.

Thomas Prior married Harriet Rachel Laysell on 20 October 1839, at the age of 21, and worked as an Agricultural Labourer like his father William, as noted on census records for each decade, while Harriet was a Straw Plaiter.

In the 1841 UK census taken on 6 June, Thomas & Harriet were residing at Rushley Green in the parish of Castle Hedingham, about 5 miles only from the village of Toppesfield. Also staying at Rushley Green were their children Eliza age 2 and John age 1, Sarah Prior age 40 (mother?) and Mary Laysell age 17, potentially a relative of Harriet.

The Laysell's ... Harriet Rachel Laysell was born in 1819 in Great Yeldam Essex, the eldest of 6 children born to Joseph & Phoebe Laysell. A year or so later it appears her family moved to Toppesfield, likely her father was seeking work as he was an Agricultural Labourer also, as her sibling Charlotte was born in Toppesfield in 1823, and later married Joseph Kemp of Toppesfield in 1844. Harriet's other siblings were Samuel b.1820, John b.1830, Sarah b.1833, and Eliza b.1838. Harriet would name her first born Eliza the following year.

Over the next 40 years Thomas & Harriet lived out their lives with their children & grandchildren in the village of Toppesfield.

Thomas & Harriet had 11 children:
  -  Eliza Prior b.1839, m. Edward Argent in 1865, d.1920 in Toppesfield
  -  John Prior b.1841, m.  Sarah Ruggles in 1860
  -  Henry Prior b.1843, m. Mary Ann Newman in 1874, d.1906
  -  Mary Ann Prior b.1844, m. Joseph Hardy, d.1922
  -  Emma Prior b. & d. January 1847
  -  Emma Prior b.1849, spinster, d.1891
  -  Charles Lewis b.1853, d.1853
  -  Ellen Prior b.1854, m. James Twitchett in 1874, d.1887
  -  Charles Prior b.1855, m. Elizabeth Bonner in 1901
  -  Emily Prior b.1857, d.1887 (see below)
  -  Lewis Prior b.1859, m. Louisa Elsdon 1865, d.1926

Thomas Prior died at age 64 in 1882 and Harriet age 65 in April 1883.

Caring for their grandsons ...

Frederick Prior was born in 1880 in London Middlesex UK. In the 1881 census he resided with his grandparents Thomas & Harriet Prior in Toppesfield, along with their children Emma Prior & Lewis Prior, and another grandson Albert Prior age 19 (our great great grandfather, see later post).

In the 1891 census Frederick, now age 11, was a scholar living with his aunt Emma Prior in Toppesfield. Emma was age 42 and 'living on the parish'. Her parents Thomas & Harriet Prior had passed away in the last decade, as had her sister Emily, and she had taken on the responsibility of caring for her nephew. However, Emma also passed away soon after the census was taken.

Twig Talk - after the 1891 census it is possible that Frederick went to live with his cousin Albert Prior. Albert had moved to Hockley Essex to work on the Great Eastern Railway, and was now married with children. In the 1901 census there was a Frederick W Prior boarding with a family in London and working as a milkman who gave his birth place as Hockley, and in the 1911 census a Frederick William Prior born & living in London, married to Hettie with son Frederick, working as a Railway Labourer.

... was Emily Prior Frederick's mother? In the 1871 census Emily was age 15, residing and working with Alfred Hardy as General Servants at Green Man in The Street Toppesfield for Charles & Martha Seaman, farmers with 50 acres & 2 daughters. It is unclear what became of Emily after this, although we believe she died in 1890 at the age of 34; did she have a son called Frederick in 1880 at the age of 24, and is she the same Emily that married John Thurley in 1883?
